How to get rid of eye stainsDo you wash your light colored dog, and find yourself disappointed with the outcome because of annoying staining around  their eyes? No matter how often you bathe him, those stains just never seem to go away. Cleaning the area with a baby wipe or topical solution may temporarily reduce or diminish the stain, but they always comes back! Having a sparkly clean pet which red or brown stains around the eyes makes them look dirty even when they aren’t.  Tear stains develop from a combination of bacteria and yeast underneath the eyes. This is common in many small breed dogs but is primarily noticed in the lighter colored pets. Your pet may be most susceptible to tear stains if they have shallow eye sockets ir hair growth around the eye.

Grooming you pets regularly isn’t going to help this problem as it comes from within your pet.  In order to get ahead of the stains some suggest fighting the problem atthe root, inside your dog.  There are a lot of products formulated for just this, however not all are safe for your dog so read the labels carefully.

Many tear stain products contain Tylosin. Tylosin is an antibiotic used for farm animals including, cattle, chicken, swine, and turkey to treat infections of skin and respiratory systems. This product is NOT approved by the FDA for dogs or cats. It has been known to make dogs very sick or cause serious side effects, so we suggest avoiding any product with Tylosin as an ingredient.

Tearlax appears to be one of the top rated products for elimination of tear stains. It boasts that it reduces existing stains, targets elimination of future stains, contains all natural ingredients and is safe for all ages, and breeds of dog. Tearlax does NOT contain Tylosin. This medication is given as a powder mixed into your dogs food. Please note this product is not recommended for pregnant or nursing females. Keeping your dog looking their best is important, but so is their health, so make sure to choose the best product for your pet!
