Spring Poles for Pit Bulls and Bully Breeds

A great way to provide your pit bull, or bully breed dog with adequate exercise day-to-day is to use a spring pole. A spring pole is a mechanism attached to a toy, or any object that your dog loves to grab with their mouth, assembled in a way that a dog can grab and hold the object and at the same time tug while the spring provides resistance. Not only does a spring pole provide endless exercise for your dog, but it is a device in which the dog will be able to use at their own leisure without your interaction. This can free you up to take care of other doggie activities, such as cleaning and bathing your other dogs, should you have any.

There is a lot of bad information floating around about the use of spring poles for pit bulls and bully breed dogs. Let’s go over a few of the most common misunderstandings:

Some people think that they are dangerous, and that their dog might get hurt.

Your dog shouldn’t get hurt using a spring pole if you design, and use it properly. Some people will tend to raise the height of the spring pole to provide more of a challenge for their dog. However, this also increases the risk of your dog falling from an unsafe height, causing an injury. Keep your spring pole at a safe level, where your dog can utilize it and still keep it’s hind legs on the ground. This will prevent injuries, and costly trips to the vet.

Aren’t Spring poles just for Pit Bulls and Bully Breeds?

Not at all… While pit bulls and bully breeds do enjoy spring poles because of their instinct to grab and hold onto objects, many dogs have the same instincts and love to play tug of war with toys. A spring pole can provide any size dog with adequate exercise in a short period of time. Every one doesn’t have a huge backyard for their dog to run around in. Even though a spring pole shouldn’t be used as an only source of daily exercise for your dog, supplementing a spring pole with a daily walks will definitely keep your dog in top shape.

Will the spring pole make my dog aggressive?

Absolutely not. Bad owners make dogs aggressive, not toys and exercise equipment. Raising your pit bull or bully breed dog from birth with love and attention, will ensure that your dog will never be aggressive towards people and other animals. Many people neglect and care poorly for their dogs, and want to blame the breed for their shortcomings.

How to Build Spring Poles for Pit Bulls and Bully Breeds

There is no one way to design a spring pole. They can be built with a few 2 x 4’s, a couple springs, a rope, and a toy, for under $50. Then there are other, more complicated designs that costs a few hundred dollars. The final blueprint and design of your spring pole is up to you at the end of the day. Now matter how much you spend, they will ultimately accomplish the same goal, which is to provide adequate exercise for your pit bull or bully breed dog.
