If you are in the market to buy an bully breed puppy, then you need to make sure that you are buying from a reputable, and trustworthy bully breeder. Time-after-time you hear stories about people getting burned, when trying to purchase puppies for the first time. Not everyone who breeds, is a good breeder. Furthermore, not all people are breeding for the right reasons. Some people are honestly just in it for the money, and will take advantage of you the first chance they get. Here are 3 qualities that a breeder should possess, before you should even consider purchasing a bully breed dog from them.
1. Reputation
Word of mouth, does, and will always make or break a breeder. If the breeder can provide you with numerous customers that will vouch for their credibility, that is always a good start. You don’t want to buy your 1st bully breed puppy from someone who either has a bad reputation, or someone who nobody has ever heard of. That’s not to say that somebody who is new in the game couldn’t provide you with top notch service, but they do have a lot less to lose.
2. Cleanliness
Whether you a visiting the breeder’s kennel, or their home, pay attention to the level of cleanliness. The way a person keeps their kennel, and even their home, can speak volumes to the level of care that they give their dogs. If a breeder doesn’t clean up after him or herself, what makes you think that they would for their dogs. Puppies kept in less than sanitary conditions, can develop health issues. You certainly DON’T want to purchase a bully breed puppy with health issues.
3. Good with Paperwork
If the breeder you are looking to purchase from is a responsible and reputable breeder, then they should have paperwork and documentation for any dogs that they are breeding. When we say paperwork, that doesn’t just mean birth certificates. A lot of times, people that are new to the game will assume someone is a good breeder because they have the dogs birth certificates. That is NOT enough. A good breeder should also be able to provide you with documentation for shots and vaccines, that the puppies have had. If they can’t or won’t prove to you, that your puppy has a clean bill of health. RUN! Another piece of paperwork to look for is the PUPPY CONTRACT. The puppy contract should clearly state terms that you and the breeder both agree on, before you make your purchase. One clause that you should make sure is in the contract, is a FULL REFUND, or another puppy should for some unfortunate reason your pup doesn’t reach a certain age. Some breeder will guarantee a dog for 1 or 2 years, other will guarantee their dogs for life. That will depend on the breeder that you are dealing with. However, if they offer you nothing, purchase nothing!
At the end of the day, these 3 qualities won’t protect you from every bad breeder out there, but it will definitely steer you in the right direction.
