Did you know that a female can conceive more than once during her cycle? Breeders Beware! One litter can have different sires if the dam (for instance by accident) mated with more than one male during her cycle. Or, even with the same sire twice, too many days apart can cause a variation in the gestation period for each set of pups. BECAUSE FEMALES ARE CAPABLE OF CONCEIVING EVERY TIME THEY GET MATED. Even if you’ve bred your female to the stud and the mating has been successful, you must still keep your female away from other males until her cycle has passed. This is how you can have a litter of seemingly unrelated pups! Half the litter looks like the mother and the father; and the other half looks like the mother and the other father!
Attempts at breeding too many days apart can cause a fluctuation in the due date. This can be an factor if you are planning a c-section. While half of the litter is ready to see the world, the other half may not have yet fully developed internally and may not survive.
Some veterinarians say that mating a stud and bitch every other day is the way to a full litter. Others will say that mating every day is much better. This reduces the chance of having puppies being born prematurely.
