Halloween happens to be one of my favorite holidays, but for pets it can quite a handful to understand.
Here are a few quick halloween safety reminders to make sure your Halloween is fun and does not include a trip to the vet or emergency room.
Costumes were intended to be scary but your dogs reaction may include fear and anxiety which could end up with a negative result, and potentially someone being bit. Your dog can be easily frightened by strangers, especially those loud energetic children in costumes. Be sure to keep your dogs away from the door when opening up for trick -or- treaters. Even a familiar face in costume can seem quite unknown to your dog. Use caution in costume situations!
Pet costumes are hilarious to us, but maybe not to your pet. If your dog seems weary of being dressed up, please pick a costume with no hats, masks or shoes. Leaving these areas free to sense their surroundings will help you keep your dog in his costume longer and happier. Warning: please do not leave your pet in costume unattended, he could become agitated and hurt himself seriously if caught up on something in their costume.
Candy! Who doesn’t love candy? It’s one of the best perks of Halloween. If your a pet parent who shares everything with their pet, today is the day to show restraint for your pets own good. Most people know Chocolate is poisonous to dogs and would avoid chocolately treats to share. However, MANY, let me repeat, MANY other candies are equally as dangerous for your pet. Hard candy and sweet candies contain Xylitol, which can also make your pet very sick.
If you pet accidently gets into the candy stash, please do not hesitate to call the Pet Poison Control Hotline immediately at: 800-213-6680
