During the winter season many dogs feel the cold as much as their owners do, especially if they don’t have specific cold weather traits. Keeping your bully warm during the winter season is important to maintaining top health, and it doesn’t really require that much extra effort. Here are a few steps you can take to ensure the coziness of your canine this winter.
Understand What your Particular Dog or Breed is Susceptible To
Some dog breeds are more prone to the cold than others, while some breeds can adapt extremely well to cold temperatures.
Provide your Bully with the Appropriate Shelter
The ideal situation would be to have your bully inside throughout the winter, only going out for exercise and when nature calls. However, if you must keep your dog(s) outside during the cold months, make sure that the dog(s) have access to shelter that is protected from the elements. Fresh straw provides a suitable layer of insulation against the cold of the ground, and makes great bedding for an outside shelter. An outdoor shelter should also have a sloped roof, and some form of heating. If the temperatures get exceptionally cold, you should still consider bringing your dog(s) inside, for safety and health reasons.
Avoid Overfeeding Your Dog
Even though it is important to eat regularly and well during the winter months, with an indoor dog there is no need to increase the food intake. Doing so can put your dog at the risk of becoming overweight. Also, make sure that your dog has constant access to clean, unfrozen water, indoors and outdoors.
Give Less or No Baths in a Week
This will help to prevent your dog from servere cold problems. If you MUST give your dog a bath, then give a shorter bath than usual with warm water, and dry your dog as quickly as possible.
