Tell our readers a little bit about yourself.
My name is Sarah Roach. I am the owner of KY Finest Bullies. You can find us in the heart of the Bluegrass state Danville, Kentucky.
What type of dogs do you breed?
I breed Standard and XL American Bullies. All my life I have been an animal lover. I originally started out with the American Pit Bull Terrier. After I got one, I was amazed by how different they were, compare to how everyone portrayed them. I was hooked and had to get more.
After being in the Pit Bull world, I discovered the American Bully. American Bullies are some of the most loyal and loving animals I have ever encountered. My love for these beautiful creatures was born.
In your opinion, what are the characteristics of a responsible dog breeder?
Understanding and following the Breed Standard is a big one for me. You have to put the dog’s health ahead of anything. You must always make sure they are up to date on all their shots and do health testing. Also, when whelping a litter you must go the extra mile in ensuring the puppies are safe and are properly cared for. Even if it means many sleepless nights.
Responsible breeders should breed with functionality in mind. Weight and size should never be your goal, but focus on achieving and maintaining the vision of the breed’s standard. Always keep in mind that the dog’s temperament is a factor as well. You don’t want a dog or human aggressive animal in your yard. We’re here to break the stereotype of this breed after all.
Lastly, always do your diligence to make sure these babies go to a wonderful and loving home. Don’t just send them off anywhere so you can make that quick buck. Responsible breeders use contracts to make sure dogs will be properly taken care of.
What type of diet do you keep your dogs on throughout the year?
KY Finest Bullies uses Sport Mix CanineX. It is a good Grain free food that I have seen great results with in my yard. I know it’s really a preference thing for every breeder, depending on how their dogs do on the food.
My advice is to find a good dog food that is balanced nicely. Next, pay attention to how your dogs perform on it. Some dogs may not like the taste or may even be allergic to certain ingredients, while others will eat just about anything you give them.
What is your favorite bloodline?
Well, that’s a tough one, but if I would have to pick I would say either Remyline or Razors Edge. Those bloodlines are where it all began really. The structure of these lines really are beautiful. Even though there’s so many other bloodlines these days, the dogs with these bloodlines still rock the show ring today.
Do you currently show any of your dogs?
Yes! Currently I am showing my production Ch. KY Finest Bullies Nitro as well as Big Mommas Stemi. I’ve got some pups coming of age soon, and will be putting them in the ring, so be on the lookout.
What advice do you have for any upcoming breeders?
First off, UNDERSTAND THE BREED! I can’t stress that enough. Do your research on the standard used in showing, as well as how bloodlines work. Find a good mentor that will help teach you the right way to get started, and mentor you along the way.
Find you a look or class you want to work with and stick to it. It’s hard and expensive work, but if you love it and work your best you will see the success you are looking for.
What do you think is the most difficult thing for people in the bully game to overcome?
Well I think the hardest thing would be honesty. Many breeders out there are only looking for the money. I’ve seen people breed dogs way too young, hang papers, and breed their females back to back with no regards for the dog’s health or wellbeing.
How do you think they can overcome this thing?
By reaching out to reputable breeders and doing your due diligence by asking questions, questions, questions. An honest breeder would not be annoyed by this, as they would see you too are wanting to improve this breed and will answer any question you may have.
Who do you look up to in the bully game, and why?
Anthony Gray & Julie Wilson no doubt. They were the only two people that would take me under their wing when I first started showing the now known GrCh. Timbo. They took the time show me how to correctly stack a dog and the correct procedures in the show ring. I also can’t forget Elizabeth Gonzalez, for being such a helpful honest sister in the bully world. Lastly, Mike Thompson for always taking care of me when I would show for him.
Tell us about one of KY Finest Bullies main goals for the year 2019.
My goals this year are the same for me every year. Exceed my own expectations. I want to produce the highest quality Bullies that you can find in the game today.
Describe how you would want things, in the bully breed Community, to be 10 years from now.
I want to see people come together as a family. There’s too much drama on who’s better than who, or throwing people under the bus to give that person a bad name. I also want to see more consistency in the dogs themselves. I understand people have a vision. However, that vision needs to be followed within the standard. How can we better our breed if we are not bettering ourselves?
What separates KY Finest Bullies from the competition?
Well I would say it would have to be my dog’s looks, my color production and not to try and throw shade to anyone else I would have to say their health and show quality.
What other hobbies or interests do you take part in?
Well I really enjoy training other people’s dogs for competition. Some may feel this is a lot of work but I get a lot of joy out of watching the growth of a dog intellectually. I love how happy my customers are when they come get their dog.
What do you think of Bully Girl Magazine?
Bully Girl Magazine is a great resource for all things bully related. I would also like to take the time to say Thank You for the opportunity to do this interview. I can’t wait to see what other awesome articles I will read in your next issue.
