State your name, and where Subcompact Bullies is located.
My name is Ty Kelley. I am the owner of Subcompact Bullies. Our current location is Northern Virginia, but that could change anytime being a U.S. Marine.
What type of dogs do you breed, and what inspired you to get involved with that particular breed?
I prefer the Micro Exotic style American Bully, and have been into dogs as long as I can remember. I particularly loved the American Pitbull Terrier, which evolved into a love for the American / Exotic Bully over the years.
What type of diet do you keep your dogs on throughout the year?
All my dogs are on a high quality kibble named Taste of the wild. I will supplement with raw meat and add small amounts of fruit, vegetables, eggs, yogurt and cottage cheese on occasion.
What is your favorite bloodline?
I wouldn’t say I have a favorite bloodline. I have used all the top bloods out there. The blood that has produced the most consistently for me is Bullseye and Dream Team blood. However, if I see a dog with features that I like, I won’t hesitate to add it to my program.
Do you currently show, any of your dogs?
I’m currently promoting my stud Cubone, and have attended shows on the East coast, Midwest, and hopfully a show near you soon.
What advice do you have for any upcoming breeders?
Do your research before buying. Go see the dogs/stud in person. If you cant, get video of the dogs from all angles. Dont hesitate to spend more money on an adult dog that fits your breeding program, instead of a puppy. This will save you vavlubale time and money in the long run. Most of all, be patient.
What do you think, is the most difficult thing for people in the bully game to overcome?
There are a lot of challenges to breeding bullies. Some of the biggest are the amount of time and money it takes even just for one breeding. C-sections, pagesterone testing, ultrasounds, Xrays, Vacinations, emergency vet visits, are just a few of the common expenses. If you are going to be breeding these dogs, you have to spend money to make money.
How do you think they can overcome this thing?
Don’t even start breeding unless you truly have a love and passion for the breed. Also, you might want to have a few thousands of dollars to waste, lol.
Who do you look up to in the bully game, and why?
I look up to the breeders who are producing a consistent look. I respect the breeder who invests back into their program and takes care of their dogs. Also, the ones who aren’t afraid to attend dog shows and set their own trends, not following everyone elses.
Tell us about one of Subcompact Bullies most memorable moments, in 2017 so far.
Really, I would say all the positive feedback I have been getting bringing Cubone out to all the shows I’ve attended. Also, having some of the best breeders liking him so much they are adding him to their program.
Describe how you would want things, in the bully Community, to be 10 years from now.
I hope to see more consistency, unity, and high quality healthy dogs being produced.
What separates Subcompact Bullies from the competition?
I keep a small amount of dogs which gives me the advantage. I can put more time, money, and attention into the breedings and dogs I own. None of my dogs live outside or in a kennel. All are part of the family, and get the attention and exercise they deserve.
In your own words, what is an Exotic Bully?
In my opinion the Exotic Bully is a more overdone version of the American Bully. They have a shorter muzzle, a shorter more compact body, wider chest, more bone, and more muscles. It’s a dog that sets itself apart from the rest, hence the name Exotic.
What is your opinion on the new exotic breed movement?
The Exotic movement is just the progression of the American Bully imo. The American Bully started out as the more extreme version of the Pit Bull. Naturally breeders are making a even more extreme version of the American Bully. The Exotic Bully is here to stay and will continue to evolve and better itself.
What other hobbies or interests do you take part in?
I am artist and sculptor. You have probably seen my work in people’s logos. Some of my work has gone viral on facebook and Instagram. I also do bonsai.
What motto do you live by?
I don’t have a motto. I just try to do the right things, and stay focused and committed to work and family.
