Big Boss Kennelz: APBT and American Bully Breeder | Ontario, Canada

Big Boss Kennelz

Tell our readers a little bit about yourself.
We are Justin and Missy, owners of Big Boss Kennelz. We originally started in Springhill, Florida, then brought our game to Norfolk County Ontario, Canada. Big Boss Kennelz was built on moral and ethical registry breeding standards. We strive to bring out the breed responsibly and respectfully, with love and passion for the dogs and people. God over money! Big Boss Kennelz is a family team, and we welcome everyone with the same passion and love to the Big Boss Family!

What type of dogs do you breed?
We breed APBT’s & American Bully’s. Our main focus is on the Standard American Bully. Truthfully, we got our inspiration from the dogs themselves. They have a ton of heart and loyalty. Secondly, we were inspired by the Real O.G. dog people such as John Colby, Dave Wilson, & The Original Elite Edge, Fabian Chichester, Gary & Tony Moore, Richard Barajas, and the list could go on but you O.G’s know who you are.

What type of diet do you keep your dogs on throughout the year?
Great question, and a very important one. We feed all of our dogs and puppies a natural raw meat diet, also including some fruit and veggies. Its important to research what your feeding your dogs, just as you would for yourself. Everyone has heard the term” you are what you eat”. This statement carries merit. Your dogs diet needs to be looked at carefully.

Dogs are carnivore’s, meaning all they need to eat is meat, protein, and fat. When eating this diet, they will shed the carbohydrate fueled fat to reveal their beautiful, muscle toned firm body. Fresh meat and fat proteins are the foundation for healthy skin, coats, muscle, and bone. Most dog food kibbles are loaded with carbohydrate fillers(sugars) and salt. This is comparable to us eating more than 50% of our diet in breads. Keep your dogs diet clean. Your dogs will be thankful, and so will you.

What is your favorite bloodline?
I got love for a bunch of blood starting with the old school working and game bred lines like Colby, Jeep, Carver, Gator, and OFRN. Then we get into more bully type blood like Razors edge, Greyline, Gottiline, Camelot, and Remyline. Each one has its own greatness and brings something special to the game.

Do you currently show, any of your dogs?
Yes absolutely! Always have and always will. I honestly don’t believe in breeding dogs without proving them first. We also don’t breed any dog under 2 yrs of age. This gives us the time necessary to prove the dogs that we carefully select for breeding. The dogs must have good conformation. If they have good conformation they will be structurally sound, and proper structure gives for proper function.

Ultimately, the result is a well balanced dog. Pair that with a sound temperament and health testing, and you got yourself a real bully. Lets also not forget how fun dog shows are for the whole family. Rain or shine, its bully show time!

What advice do you have for any upcoming breeders?
Honestly, stay true to the original breed standards. Do your research and get yourself a few O.G. mentors. Do not cut corners for a buck. Prove your dogs conformation and/or working status. Get your dogs health checked in depth. This helps you really structure a program to selectively breed the right dogs. Too many people are breeding just for a certain look, even when they know the dogs have known genetic defects.

Doing this only worsens the breed, and hurts the dogs and people buying them. The goal for breeders should be to better the breed. If you know you should fix the dog, just fix the dog! Be loyal, and have integrity. Provide breeder support to your people and others. Oh, and one more thing. NO paper hanging!

What do you think, is the most difficult thing for people in the bully game to overcome?
Its my opinion, people are getting caught up in type hype, also known as designer breeds. They are breeding outside ethical standards for a quick buck. This is tough to overcome. Money starts talking and all they see is dollar signs. That’s when the breed really starts suffering.

Who do you look up to in the bully game, and why?
We have a few people we look up to in the bully game. With that being said, these are real dog people, old generations and new, whom we have come to know personally and respect what they do for bull breeds in general. Dave Wilson – ABKC Razor’s Edge, Fabian Chichester – RKC Remyline, Jamie Sweet – Blue River Bullies A.K.A The MF River, John Bonello – K9 Extreme Sports , Bob Emmell – Notorious Bulldogs, Roman Chernyshov Queen – RC Kennels, Jeremy Bhagwandin – Bulletproof Pitbulls, and Simon Davis & Karl Turner – Lions Lair Kennels

Tell us about one of Big Boss Kennelz main goals for the year 2019.
We have lots of stuff going on this year. From advocacy letters to end breed specific legislation, customized dog furniture and specialty products, working dogs, showing dogs, and we are even co-hosts to Canada’s Largest Bully Breed event of the year with Victorious Bullies.

This show is huge for us and will be great fun for everyone. The show is called Bullicious Summer Breeze 2019. Shout out to our whole family team at Big Boss Kennelz for all your love, support, help, hard work, and dedication.

Describe how you would want things, in the bully breed Community, to be 10 years from now.
Consistent! Honestly, we should see one breed one standard and get back to the original American Bully. Dogs currently, and even 10- 20 years from now should still look like Notorious Juan Gotti, Razor’s Edge Throwin Knuckles, and Low Jack Remy-Martin.

It would be great to see ethical breeding practices, along with breeders showing and working the dogs. We don’t want to see gremlin couch potatoes. These dogs should have thick bone and heavy muscle structures, very well proportioned, that can move and work hard. Lets keep’em that way!

What separates Big Boss Kennelz from the competition?
That’s a good question. We like healthy competition for the dogs in the rings and working events. However, we are by no means in competition with other kennels. We respect others who also share the same love and passion and do right by the breed. Its particularly important for the Canadian bully community to help and work with one another for the greater good of the breed. This also means holding one another accountable for unethical breeding practices.

Educating people who come to us is important. We want them to be able to make a valid decision on what dog purchase is right for them and their families. We have a tight screening process and we don’t just sell our dogs to anyone. All new bully owners are required to get professional training. This helps them understand how to properly handle and care for an American Bully.

We also don’t just let people breed our lines. At Big Boss Kennelz, we have a very well structured program in place to keep the dogs clean, functional, and very consistent. We plan to keep it that way. Clean family set ups, clean dogs, and clean diets. We let the dogs speak for themselves!

What other hobbies or interests do you take part in?
I also teach Martial Arts and self defense under my head instructor Mr. Dennis Gray. Health fitness, mind, body, and soul is something our whole family takes part in and enjoys very much.
