Little Shelter : Animal Rescue & Adoption Center

Located in Huntington, NY on  six acres of property is our areas only non-profit, no kill animal shelter. Unfortunately, thousands of pets end up in shelters every year for a variety of reasons. Most shelters will give the younger pets a small period of time to find a home and that’s it. Older pets, never stand a chance.  At Little Shelter, all pets, regardless of breed, age or, physical or mental condition, are given a  safe haven with no expiration date attached. They work  with each pet to  properly socialize, make healthy, and the end result, find a loving forever home for every dog and cat.

Shelter pets will only be placed with parents who go threw a thorough screening and interview process. This ensures a safe, responsible owner and a wonderful life for the animal. Little Shelter has won Best of Long island from 2010 – present for best shelter/rescue.

Some of the wonderful programs offered by Little Shelter include the Humane Education Program which bring the education to the schools and our kids. Little Shelter staff along with dog or puppy visit children at school, camp, etc. and teach the children how to property care for animals, and how to treat each other. Installing these virtues in children at an early age can help lead to responsible pet ownership as adults.

Little Shelter also offers ASK program. Ask stands for Animal Soup Kitchen, which provides free pet food, vaccines, medical treatment, and spay/neuter to older, sick, impoverished, and disabled pet owners. In helping people who truly love their pets  keep their pets, and be able to care for  them adequately it keeps people from being forced to land their pets in shelters.

Little Shelter is open 7 days a week, so if you are looking to find a loving pet who needs a home, think about adoption. There are plenty of wonderful dogs who haven’t been given a fair chance at happiness yet. Little Shelter continues to do amazing things for the last 86 years due to public support. So if you have a few extra dollars, think about a small donation to help a breed we all love so much, and to keep their life saving programs going.  Visit their website for more information on available pets, foster service, and upcoming fundraising events at www.littleshelter.com
