State your name, your kennel, and where your kennel is located.
My name is Jonathan Oakes, founder Oak Haven Bullies, located in Virginia.
What type of dogs do you breed, and what inspired you to get involved with that particular breed?
Oak Haven Bullies breeds the American Bully, preferably pockets and pocket “extremes”. I originally was drawn to the American Bully after seeing a pocket extreme in person. Shortly after, I purchased one of my own Ever since then, I have been studying basic genomics, bloodlines and everything else I possibly can involving the breed.
In your opinion, what are the characteristics of a responsible dog breeder?
Responsible breeders visually don’t have a set appearance. Characteristically though, a responsible breeder will keep a clean kennel and properly manicured bulls. Most are willing to help the younger generation by sharing their knowledge and experiences. Responsible breeders openly discuss with you their kennel/breed vision, as they have nothing to hide. Overall everything they do is about their dogs & vision.
What type of diet do you keep your dogs on throughout the year?
I feed Victor Hi-Pro annually. Normally, I mix it with some raw beef, pork, chicken and an egg. In the Fall and Winter, I will throw in some venison raw with the kibble. On special occasions they get satin balls.
What is your favorite bloodline?
Obviously Marcello and Kingdom, as it’s what I have LOL. I don’t have a set favorite though. I like certain traits seen from certain bloodlines.
Do you currently show any of your dogs?
No, I currently do not. I had plans to show my foundation female, but of course I don’t breed for a living. I’m a hobby breeder with a full time job, so work takes priority. Thankfully, my sister has stepped up and asked me if she could start showing them for me.
What advice does Oak Haven Bullies have for any upcoming breeders?
As a “up-comer” myself, my advice is to open your mind, and shut your mouth! You have two ears & 1 mouth for a reason. Find established breeders, and have conversations with those willing to speak. Do your own research and remember, you’ll never know enough to quit learning.
What do you think is the most difficult thing for people in the bully game to overcome?
The negativity of others for sure.
How do you think they can overcome this thing?
People are quick to point out what they don’t like, or bash what they wish they had. Take it with a grain of salt, as most responsible for such behavior are still are living with their mother.
Who do you look up to in the bully game, and why?
I look up to the following people: Tone Roland of Duval Bullies, JayNo of BullyCampLine, Luke Wolford of PowieWowieBullies, Manny Rollon of Traplife Bullies, and Cody Goldsmith of Bully Island kennels. Each of these men have amazing productions. Even as successful as they are, none have ever told me to kick rocks. They’ve always been helpful with answering any questions I may have, and sharing their knowledge about the breed.
Tell us about one of Oak Haven Bullies main goals for the year 2019.
Well, this December or January I’ll hopefully be whelping a litter. So my main goal is seeing my productions grow, and hopefully letting others get to see them at some shows as well. All while trying to finish building my indoor/outdoor kennel, and fencing in the yard LOL.
Describe how you would want things, in the bully breed Community, to be 10 years from now.
I’d like to see more distinctive breed types through all the classes of the American Bully. Less hating and bashing would be nice as well, but I see that as a select few, not a majority of the community.
What separates Oak Haven Bullies from the competition?
Well I’m breeding American Bullies like everyone else. However, as a hobby breeder, I’m breeding for quality over quantity and color. I breed correct dogs, rather than follow the latest hype. Color is a easy add genetically once you have the other breed standards met. I’ll take 4 quarters over 100 pennies any day of the week!
What other hobbies or interests do you take part in?
Breeding is my hobby. However, I also enjoy fishing, hunting and other outdoor activities, along with spending time with my family and dogs.
What do you think of Bully Girl Magazine?
Bully Girl is doing a great job of helping bring positive media to the bully breeds and the community. I love to read the knowledgeable, positive articles and blogs. It’s a nice change from certain Bully Pages on social media nowadays.
