Type R Bullies: American Bully Breeder

Tell our readers about Type R Bullies.
We are Kali Fate & Kyle McCullough of Type R Bullies, just north of Seattle, Washington.

What type of dogs do you breed? What inspired you to get involved with that particular breed?
We breed American Bullies, however we are planning on getting into French Bulldogs as well in the near future. We’ve owned Pit Bulls in the past, and got our first bully in 2010. That was it. We were hooked! We fell in love with the breed’s impressive looks, and loving temperament.

What type of diet do you keep your dogs on throughout the year?
We wean puppies directly to a raw diet. We have found they do best on a balanced raw diet compared to kibble. However, a few of our older dogs have been on kibble forever and do well with Victor or Natures Domain pet food.

What is your favorite bloodline?
I like Daxline dogs, but ChumleeLine is my favorite. Ok, that’s not actually a thing yet, but wait for it because I have no doubt that it will be.

Do you currently show, any of your dogs?
Yes, we recently purchased a Grand Champion Rocko son from a good friend of ours. We have started showing him as well as a bitch from a litter we had a year ago. It’s hard to make it to a lot of shows while juggling kids and their schedules with sports, multiple dogs, work etc. But dog shows are a great way to connect with other bully owners and breeders. I think it’s good exposure, and it provides socialization for the dogs. So we’re trying to make it out to as many as possible.

What advice do you have for any upcoming breeders?
Research, research, research! There is so much to know. The better prepared you are prior to breeding, the better the outcome will likely be for your litter. Breeding is also expensive. You should have a large emergency fund set away specifically for your dogs. Find a good vet who is knowledgeable on your breed of choice, and is “breeder friendly”. A lot of them are not.

What do you think, is the most difficult thing for people in the bully game to overcome?
Their ego’s… LOL.

How do you think they can overcome this thing?
Bully breeders need to come together as a community to support each other. We also need experienced breeders to be mentors to new breeders. Share your knowledge and guide them the right way. We need to start acting like ethical breeders, and stop putting up with careless breeding by others in our communities. Otherwise, the american bully breed will never be taken seriously.

Who do you look up to in the bully game, and why?
Ana McLean – She introduced me to Puppy Culture and is a big supporter of health testing! She also breeds show quality bullies and runs a local rescue, called the Washington Bully Alliance.
Stephanie Lynn Miller of MBB/Chumlee & Company – She has bad ass dogs, and they are all spoiled! She has been the best person to do dog business with!

Tell us about one of Type R Bullies main goals going into the year 2018.
This year and going into next year, we are focusing on doing health testing. We started testing through Pawprint genetics. We plan to get the rest our dogs checked this year along with cardiac clearance. Once the younger ones turn 2, they will  get their hips and elbows done through OFA.

Describe how you would want things, in the bully breed Community, to be 10 years from now.
I would love to see more breed bans continue to be lifted. Similar to what recently happened in Iowa. This allows the public to see what great dogs they are. We need to move away from everyone having their own vision, and all begin working towards breeding dogs that fit the breed standard. There is currently very little consistency in the American Bully breed.

What separates Type R Bullies from the competition?
We’re not a large kennel. Currently we only have 8 dogs, but that’s because they all live inside our house! They are all  are treated as part of the family. No kennel dogs here.

Our puppies are raised inside our living room. We follow Puppy Culture protocols. For any one who hasn’t heard of it, Puppy Culture is basically a program of early socialization and training, that makes a huge difference in the puppies. I encourage every dog owner and breeder to check it out. Puppy Culture is definitely a game changer in raising happy, well adjusted dogs! Check out Puppyculture.com.

What other hobbies or interests do you take part in?
Dogs take up the majority of our lives, LOL. However, our other interests include cars: race cars, drift cars, car shows etc. Hence the name Type R Bullies. My son also plays year round sports: football and select baseball. So that keeps us pretty busy too.

What do you think of Bully Girl Magazine?
We love Bully Girl Magazine! It would be awesome to see you guys at some shows in the Pacific NW!
